Marthakal Homelands Health Service is situated on Elcho Island and is a mobile Yolgnu (Aboriginal) Medical Service covering 15,000 square kilometres in the remote East Arnhem Land with a population between 250 to 400.

Marthakal Homelands Health Service began operation in 2001 after the traditional owners of the Marthakal homelands lobbied the federal government for a health service dedicated to their homelands. There are 29 homelands in the Marthakal Homelands region, for which the medical service is on 24 hours emergency call. The Marthakal Homelands Health Service is funded to visit and respond to health needs of people living in the Homelands. There is a separate health service in Galiwin’ku, Ngalkanbuy Health Service, which is funded to provide primary health care to the people living in Galiwin’ku and provide the acute/emergency clinical services to the whole catchment area including the homelands.
